The United Nations Environment Programme or UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
This position is based in the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), Bangkok duty station.
Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and the direct supervision of the Deputy Regional Director, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsibilities
- Takes the lead in strategy, planning, development and implementation of large, complex communications campaigns including global promotion initiatives, public information programmes for the region; works with UNEP headquarters to develop ways to implement campaigns system-wide and to incorporate the campaign message and themes into all relevant events and products including social media.
- Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers and other staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications and public relations issues.
- Writes speeches, speaking notes, media advisories, and other content for the use by media; drafts and edits regional reports, press releases, media advisories and other written outputs; coordinates the development of key messages and themes for major regional events to promote relevant policy or environmental messages.
- Develops strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize impact of promotional objectives; serves as a spokesperson to media organizations, governmental bodies, national groups, private sector organizations, educational organizations, international organizations;
- Evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UNEP in the region; builds information networks, plan and oversee maintenance of publicly accessible information materials on UNEP; plans and develops outreach activities including capacity building for journalists through workshops and training and social media engagement.
- Identifies sources and seeks funding and other assistance for major campaigns in the region.
- Represents the regional office in meetings and conferences; fulfills speaking engagements and makes presentations to groups on UNEP activities and advocate issues of concern; organizes media coverage and arranges for media contacts, briefings, interviews; organizes seminars, lectures, conferences, public events on major issues environmental and events.
- Supports and advises on media interview requests for country offices.
- Manages the operation of the unit to include participating in coordination of substantive and administrative activities of the unit; provides procedural advice and prepares human resources plans and budget submissions.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Perform other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public relations or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Professional qualification in public relations is desirable.
Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.
- Experience in managing public information and communication role at the international level is required.
- Experience dealing and implementation of large communications campaigns is desirable.
- Experience working in the UN or similar organizations is desirable.
- Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
NOTE: 'Fluency' equals a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (speak, read, write and understand) and 'Knowledge of' equals a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
