Webinar: Introduction to Climate Technologies in Buildings

As per 5th Assessment report of the IPCC, the buildings sector globally accounted for about 32% of final energy use and 8.8 Gt CO2 emissions, in 2010. This includes both direct and indirect emissions. The share of the building sector in global GHG emissions was 19% (including direct and indirect) in 2010. The energy demand with associated emissions shall continue to grow, with projected demand to double by mid century and CO2 emissions shall increase by 50-150% in the same time period. In parallel, there are significant  advances in technologies, know‐how and policies that provide opportunities to reduce energy consumption in the sector. Both new and existing buildings need to be addressed in order to bring down the overall consumption levels and the associated emissions.

This webinar will provide an overview of impact and relevance of energy consumption in the building sector in global scenario and its potential to mitigate climate change. The presentation will highlight some of the key techniques and technologies that can help reduce energy consumption, including technologies related to building design and passive measures, material choices to reduce heat gains/losses from buildings, low energy lighting and cooling systems. The webinar will discuss the gaps and barriers that exist in the sector along with examples on policies and tools from India that have been in place to address these issues. Since green building rating systems are globally recognized as market transformation tools that can provide significant push to the sector in achieving desired goals of energy and water sustainability, the presentation will also provide an overview of the green building rating system developed by TERI that is recognised as the National rating system for green buildings in India. Case studies on green /energy efficient buildings in building will be presented.

The Presenters

Mili Majumdar B.Arch. , M.Tech (IIT, Chennai), is Director, Sustainable Habitat Division at TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi). She has over 22 years of experience in the field of energy and environment with special emphasis on sustainable habitats and urban development. She has experience on several aspects of sustainable habitats ranging from policy analysis and development, providing technical assistance in designing and implementing green climate resilient buildings, enabling energy efficiency retrofits in existing  buildings, evaluating financial viability of green building projects, and working on macro issues related to climate change and urban development. She has been part of all major policy formulation in the green/energy efficient building segment in India.

She has led a team to conceptualise and develop a system for rating of green buildings in India. The rating system, GRIHA addresses environmental and social concerns of building construction in India and provides a framework for development of habitats and buildings that are environmentally benign, cost effective and socially responsible. She has edited a book on “Energy Efficient Buildings in India” which is one of the most successful publications in this domain in India. She has been an author of IIASA publication on Global Energy Assessment .

She is member of Assurance group for World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) for EEB 2.0 Project on Energy efficient buildings and has been a team lead for several projects on sustainable buildings and policies for UNEP, ADB and IFC. She is member of Committee for formulation of energy conservation building codes for India and  Member of Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for revision and updating of National Building Code of India. She is Founder member of the Indian Building Performance Simulation Association. She has been awarded the Construction World Woman of the Year 2011 by ASAPP media. She has lectured and delivered presentations in several national and international forums. She regularly writes for blogs, popular publications and newspapers.

Tarun Garg BE , M.Tech is Area Convener and Fellow in The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). He has work experience of more than 8 years in the area of  Process Mapping, Resource Management, Resource Audit/Conservation, Market Research, Strategy Development, Demand Side Management, and Capacity Building. He has diversified  work experience under the umbrella of sustainability, Research and Development, Resource (energy and water) conservation/audit in industries and buildings, Clean Development Mechanism/bilateral offset credit mechanism, and Policy formulation and implementation. He is BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Government of India) certified Energy Auditor and a Certified Professional on International Protocol on Measurement and Verification (CMVP). He has developed various tools on assessing energy performance of buildings and developed a tool for hour by hour analysis of air conditioning system for buildings. He is involved in development of  energy criterions for GRIHA rating system.
