Joint Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Principles

The world is committed to universal and equitable access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for all by 2030, but achieving this Sustainable Development Goal of universal access to WASH is an incredible challenge, one that requires a collective understanding of the problem and its solutions.

The set of shared principles released today provides a framework that we at IRC together with WaterAid, Water for People, and Aguaconsult will use to shape our thinking and doing as we seek to drive towards our goal.

We believe that Universal access to water and sanitation services can only last with government leadership and political commitment, and when policy makers and service providers are held to account for responsive services that reach all communities.

At its heart this set of principles therefore seek to frame and address the systemic challenges facing the sector, most importantly the need for national systems that can break the cycle of dependency and poor service delivery we currently face. 

With sector leaders like Water for People, Aguaconsult, WaterAid as co-signatories, we are positive that the vision and approach set out in the principles will be appealing and that many others will be keen join us.

We are therefore thrilled to share these principles, and see what the future holds as we strive to ensure sustainable water and sanitation services.
