IAPH Members Discuss Smart Ports in Hamburg

June 02, 2015

A total of 180 port operators from 90 countries, including four from Indonesia, attended the 29th World Port Conference held by the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) in Hamburg, Germany, on June 1-5, 2015.

Members of the association shared their experience related to the implementation of smart ports in the energy and logistics sectors.

“We can learn and seize the opportunity to work with developed countries,” Indonesian consul-general for Hamburg Sylvia Arifin said at a dinner gala at the Indonesian Consulate General on Sunday May 31, 2015.

Sylvia explained that Hamburg Port was the second largest and busiest port in Europe after Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Sylvia dubbed the 7,200-hectare port as the gateway to the world for serving as an international trading hub. Hamburg port, as well as Bremen and Bremen Hafen ports, have utilized renewable energy to run its activities.

“They use wind-generated power,” Sylvia added.

Sylvia suggested that Indonesia could learn from Hamburg to implement such an efficient system through cooperation with Germany in building the capacity of Indonesian experts.

“We’re also mulling to initiate sister-port cooperation with Indonesian ports,” Sylvia revealed.

The IAPH handles more than 60 percent of the world’s sea trade and almost 80 percent of the world’s container traffic. PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I, II, III and IV have become active members of the Tokyo-based, non-profit and non-governmental organization.

“Indonesia will be the host of the next conference in Bali in 2017,” Pelindo II president director RJ Lino said.

RJ Lino is one of the eight executive committee members representing Asia/Oceania at the association’s executive board for 2013-2015. Lino also serves as the 3rd vice president of IAPH for ASIA/Ociania for the next two years.
