Flooding once again hits parts of Greater Jakarta

Heavy rains since Tuesday have caused four major rivers that run through the Greater Jakarta area to overflow. The overflowing of the Angke, Pesanggrahan, Ciliwung and Krukut rivers inundated several neighborhoods in West and East Jakarta early on Wednesday.

Cooperation on shared water resources, within as well as between countries, is critical, especially in water-scarce regions where the upstream and downstream impacts of consumption and pollution are magnified. For this, it is critical to nurture the opportunities for cooperation in water management among all stakeholders and improve the comprehension of the challenges and benefits of water cooperation in order to build mutual respect, understanding and trust among countries and promote peace, security and sustainable economic growth.

Indonesia Committed to Increasing Coverage of Clean Water Supply

The Indonesian government, as one of the signatory countries of The Millennium Declaration, is committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) including the target to halve the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water by 2015. The Indonesian government has incorporated the MDG target in its national program for drinking water and sanitation.However with more than 100 million people in Indonesia lack access to safe drinking water, it seems the Nation really need to work hard to implement the program.
