Current Award Holder
The 2008 Young Water Professionals Award holder is Enrique Cabrera Jr of the Instituto Tecnologico del Agua, Valencia (Spain).
Shortly after obtaining his university degree, Enrique began researching on performance assessment of drinking water utilities. He soon joined the performance indicators taskforce within the IWA Efficient Operation Management Specialist Group. Enrique made small contributions to the first edition of the taskforce’ manual (including the development of the software Sigma Lite). For the second edition of the Performance indicators for water supply systems Enrique became a member of the core group developing the manual, contributing to the consolidation of the IWA proposal on performance indicators.
The IWA PI system has become the worldwide reference on this topic. In addition to the hundreds of initiatives worldwide using the system, the new ISO 24500 standards are based on the system, and part of this proposal has already been adopted by the American Water Works Association and the World Bank.
Due to the nature of the work within the Instituto Tecnológico del Agua, Enrique’s work has not been limited to pure research. He has participated in several initiatives including consultancy work for water companies, research projects funded by the EU and the Spanish Ministry, international standardization.
Enrique’s involvement in IWA can only be seen as exemplar, of which we need to highlight:
- Secretary of Efficient Operation and Management Specialist Group (since 2001)
- Leader of the Benchmarking Task Group (Since 2002)
- Chairman of Pi 2008 Confernece (Valencia, Spain)
- Programme Committee of IWA YWP Conferences 2004, 2006, 2008
- Water Science and Technology Water Supply Reviewer
