Indonesia Committed to Cutting Plastic Waste in Oceans

Indonesian Government is committed to reduce plastic waste from the ocean to achieve the goal to be the world’s maritime center.

"The impact of plastic waste in Indonesian seas is devastating," Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs deputy assistant of Legal and Agreement Division Budi Purwanto stated while disseminating Presidential Decree No. 16/2017 on Indonesia Maritime Policy in Sewokoprojo Hall, Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta on Friday (10/11).

He claimed that reducing plastic waste is an embodiment of the implementation of world’s maritime center. Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs (Menko Kemaritiman) has led national and international initiatives to process plastic waste into energy, asphalt, and others, he added.

"The maritime policy is also equipped with action plans ranging from collective development, plastic waste processing, welfare improvement, energy program, fish theft eradication, enhancement of human resources, and much more," he explained.

He continued that plastic waste is one of the main problems that impedes Indonesia from becoming the world’s maritime center since Indonesia places second in the highest plastic producing country in the world.
